About the play

A humorous look at a boy trying to find a girl who actually likes him, a task complicated by a series of awkward encounters and social experiments. 

This is our one-act touring show that will travel to local middle schools for assembly-style performances and talkbacks and also perform during the school day for FVHS students. The run time is approximately 40 minutes.

Character Breakdown

All roles are open to performers of any ethnicity. ​This play has a highly flexible ensemble and some actors may be asked to play multiple roles. While the character descriptions may seem basic, they give you a lot of room to make strong character choices using your personal interpretation. This is a comedy, so we are open to realistic character choices or over-the-top stereotypes.

  • Tommy: A slightly awkward, bookish teen who doesn't trouble himself with trying to be very social...until it's time for the school dance.
  • Tommy's Mom: Worried her son loves books more than having a social life.
  • Gerald: Tommy's best friend with accidental rizz.
  • Florence: A confident teen.
  • Jill: Isn't afraid to say exactly what's on her mind.
  • Melissa: A popular girl who only sees people for what they can do for her.
  • Reena: A sort of tomboy that hates Tommy; very blunt. Must have strong deadpan delivery.
  • Marcy: Doesn't know Tommy.
  • Missy: Expresses herself with a bit of dramatic flair.
  • Amber: The school mascot.
  • Suzy: A feminist.
  • Melanie: Looking to use her date to the dance as an advertising opportunity for her family's local restaurant.
  • Allison: An artsy type who observes her peers a lot. 
  • Louise, Cynthia, Marla, Karen, Marie, Susan, Angela, Sally: A whole line of girls who give various reasons for rejecting Tommy. 
  • Ms. Kite: A friendly teacher who speaks bluntly, but with a touch of humor.
  • Ensemble: A group of cheerleaders and other high school student and staff types.
